Mr Abhisit announced his resignation almost five hours after the polls closed on Sunday night in a show of responsibility after the party won fewer than 100 seats. "I think he [Mr Abhisit] deserves credit for establishing a clear political position. Mr Somjai said that in Thai political culture "slippery" politicians are accepted in certain situations while "honest and straightforward" politicians like Mr Abhisit may find themselves less wanted. However, he said former Democrat leader Chuan Leekpai, a respected party figure, is not a suitable choice. Dr Warong last year entered the party leadership race in which he promised to bring changes to the party but was defeated by Mr Abhisit.
